Emergency Communication - Accessing University Alerts

In an emergency or serious threat, BYU sends alerts to students, faculty, and employees.

The following are some of the methods:

Email Alerts:

To issue an emergency email alert, a designated member of the BYU Police Department composes an alert email and sends it out to university patrons by means of a specific LISTSERV.

Note: If an emergency situation affects the BYU campus directly and affects the internal networking system, which controls the email database, this method of contact will be lost.

IP Phone Alerts:

The IP phone alert sends an audio recording and text message through the telephony servers to all IP phones on campus. The LCD screen will display the text message, and the handset will ring with a call of an automated voice alert. If an individual is using the phone at the time of the alert, the text message will appear, and the automated voice alert will play through the current call. The owner of the phone will hear the message, but the person on the other end will not.

Text Messages:

The text message option applies to all who enter their cell phone numbers in the Personal Information system's Emergency Alert Text Message/SMS contact field. The number needs to be listed in this field to receive the alert text.

Access this Service

Emergency alerts are automatically sent to IP phones on campus and in on-campus housing.

To be alerted through email or text:

  1. Open the Personal Information page by going to https://link.byu.edu/persumm or finding the link in the MyBYU link search (personal information).

  2. Select the Contact tab.

  3. Enter your primary email address under the Email Address heading and your cell phone number under the Campus Emergency Alert Contact Information heading.

    Note
: Your cell phone number must be entered into this field to receive alert messages, even if the number is found elsewhere under Personal Information.

Another feature of this service is the Salt Lake Center Emergency Alert System, which provides the same Emergency Alert Service System to BYU's Salt Lake Center, independent of alerts to BYU Provo's main campus. These alerts will be sent by a Church Global Security Operations (GSOC) center team member, rather than the BYU Police.
