Printers - General Information

Pharos is no longer supported by OIT as a service. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to Print and Mail for support.

For Print and Mail's general number, call 801-422-3365.

For physical printer-related issues, call 801-422-4859.

For software or computer-related issues, call 801-422-1469.

This service allows OIT to track and associate incidents related to the limited support we offer for personal and campus printers. OIT transferred ownership of Campus Printers to BYU Print and Mail services including all support, costs, configuration, maintenance and any other printer related issues.

The OIT Technology Support Center (801-422-4000 or it@byu.edu) may assist with very basic support (including installing drivers, etc.) but will refer the majority of issues to BYU Print and Mail services for campus "Express Print" printer or Pharos related issues. You may contact Print and Mail services directly by calling (801) 422-1469. If the user requires assistance with a department or personal office printer, they need to reach out to their CSR, as these are not on the same "Express Print" printers that BYU Print and Mail supports.

For personal printers, the OIT Technology Support Center will provide limited support based on our experience and then refer users to vendor specific support resources.

Campus printers are reliant on a backend service provided by OIT using the Pharos Printer Management tools. Pharos enables print queue management, billing, and print jobs. Please see our Pharos Server Feature Article for more information.

There is no cost for this service.

Add or Remove Print Drivers from Windows

This section describes the procedures for both adding and removing an installed printer driver from a Windows operating system.  This is different than installing or uninstalling a printer; this article deals with drivers loaded into the local windows print server.  While this procedure also works on the Windows Server OS, this procedure can be done in client versions of Windows.

The campus printers are HP COLOR LAZERJET 4600 PS (BYU Public Color) and HP LAZERJET 9000 PS (BYU Public Black & White).

Setting up a Printer on Mac OS X

USB Printer

  1.  Prior to connecting the printer to your computer, please make sure that you have installed the software that came with your printer. Mac OS X has built-in support for many popular printers (such as HP LaserJet series). However, some printers (Okidata Laser printers and Epson inkjet printers) need a driver installed from the included CDs.

  2. Connect the printer using a USB cable and turn the printer on.

  3. Click on the Apple menu and select “System Preferences…”

  4. When a window opens, click on “Print & Fax” icon.

  5. In the list of printers, under Printer tab, you should see the new printer listed.

Network Printer

  1. Prior to connecting the printer to your computer, please make sure that you have installed the software that came with your printer. Mac OS X has built-in support for many popular printers (such as HP LaserJet series). However, some printers (Okidata and Xerox Laser printers) need a driver installed from the included CDs.

  2. Connect the printer to the network using an Ethernet cable.

  3. Obtain printer’s printing method (LPD or IPP), DNS name or IP address, and printer queue name from your CSR or a person responsible for the printer.

  4. Click on the Apple menu and select “System Preferences…”

  5. When a window opens, click on “Print & Fax” icon.

  6. Click on the “+” sign under the listing of current printers.

  7. In a window that appears, click on the “IP Printer” button near the top.

  8. Enter information as follows:

    1. Protocol – “Line Printer Daemon LPD” or “Internet Printing Protocol IPP.”

    2. Address – Enter either the DNS name or the IP address of the printer.

    3. Queue – Enter the name of the printer queue or leave it blank if unknown.

    4. Name – Give the printer a name. This is the name the printer will be known to the computer.

    5. Location – This field is optional and may be used for asset management purposes.

    6. Print Using – If the printer software has been properly installed, most likely the setup routine will auto-detect printer’s model and set appropriate driver to be used. If not, select printer driver manually.

Cannot Print to a Local Printer Connected by LPT

This concerns what to do when a computer won't print to a local printer connected by the LPT port and not by the Network or with USB.

Note: Most printers will not be connected to the LPT ports on a computer because it's an old method. This article applies to old printers that do.

To attempt to fix this issue:

  1. Make sure the Printer is turned on.

  2. Go to the Start Menu and select Printers and Faxes.

  3. Right-click on the printer in question.

  4. Go to the Ports tab.

  5. Check to make sure that the printer set to print to the LPT port and not a network or USB port.

  6. Click Okay.

  7. Try printing again.
