How to Create a Net ID (BYU Account Creation)

General Instructions for Creating a BYU Account:

  1. Make sure no one is already signed in on the browser you are using.

  2. Go to accountcreation.byu.edu.

  3. Read the introduction and click Begin.

  4. Answer  "Why are you creating a BYU Account?"

  5. Enter your personal information and add an email address that is not already associated with an existing BYU account and is not a BYU-owned domain email (ie, netid@byu.edu, example@byu.net, etc.).

  6. After reviewing the terms of use, check the box next to "I acknowledge and I agree" and check "I am not a robot."

  7. You will then be sent a verification code to the email address you entered.

    • If you don’t see the email in your inbox, check your spam folder or click Didn't receive a code?

    • Copy and paste the code or type it directly into the verification code field.

    • Click Continue.

  8. You will be presented with a list of suggested Net ID's that you can choose from. You can choose from the list or create your own Net ID.

    • Note: the Net ID must start with a letter and be 5-8 characters long. It cannot be changed after creation, so choose wisely.

  9. Click Continue.

    • You will be presented with a dialog that confirms your understanding that the Net ID you chose is permanent.

    • Click OK.

  10. Create a password for your account. There are a few requirements for a sufficient password. Keep typing until each of the requirements turns green.

  11. Confirm your password.

  12. Click I'm not a robot.

  13. Click Continue.

  14. You should see a dialog that confirms your account was created.

  15. Click Continue to Sign In.

Note: When trying to create a Net ID, make sure you are not logged in as another user on the browser. This will create problems when trying to create a new Net ID.

If you enter an email and are informed that it is already associated with an account, contact the Technology Support Center (801-422-4000 or ). If you already have a record on file with BYU (such as an academic record), or if you receive any error such as "conflict of information," you should contact the Records and Registration Office (801-422-2631). If you are an employee (or prospective employee), contact the Staff Employment Office (801-422-3563).

Generic NetIDs

Generic NetIDs are NetIDs for non-person accounts, such as a department NetID or an account associated with a company that is regularly contracted with BYU.

These accounts can be created by working with the relevant department's CSR to create that. Generic NetIDs cannot be created at accountcreation.byu.edu.

I Forgot My Net ID

Users who have forgotten their Net ID can discover it on their own with the following steps:

  1. Go to accountrecovery.byu.edu.

  2. Select the option Enter your Recovery Email.

    • A Recovery Email is a validated email that is unique to your BYU account. If you created your account after June 2019, you linked a recovery email during the account creation process. If you created your account before that date, it is unlikely that you have a recovery email set up. After you log in, you can go to myaccount.byu.edu to set up a recovery email.

  3. Enter your recovery email in the Email field.

  4. Click on I'm not a robot.

  5. Click Continue.

  6. Check your email.

    • If you don’t see the email in your inbox, check your spam folder or request a new code by clicking Send it again.

    • If the email you entered is not a valid recovery email

      • You will receive an email letting you know that the address you entered is not a valid recovery email

      • You can try any other email addresses that might be associated with your BYU account.

    • If you do not know your Recovery Email or think you might not have one, contact the Technology Support Center (801-422-4000 or ).

  7. The email should contain your Net ID and the available log in options that you have configured. Now log in to your account.

    • Use the Net ID or the federated login options that you received in the email to attempt logging in to your account.

    • If you cannot remember your password, click here go to the password reset steps.

If the above steps do not work, and you cannot recover your password, call the Technology Support Center (801-422-4000 or ), they are available the following hours: M-F 6am-10pm, Sat 9am-6pm, Closed Sundays and most Holidays. They can help users reset their password over the phone (not through email or chat).

Can I Change My Net ID?

To change your NetID, go to pichanges.byu.edu to request a change to your NetID.

Note: If you change your Net ID the old Net ID will not be available for someone else to use.

A known issue related to changing a NetID is PeopleSoft not updating their system after a user changes their NetID, which means the user is not able to clock into Y-Time. To resolve this, the user just needs to call the Student Employment Office at 801-422-3562 (or 801-422-3563 for part-time staff) to updated their system.

I was trying to create an account but was told I already have one.

If you are trying to create an account and receive a message that a BYU account is already associated with your information, you may have created an account before for a number of reasons, such as for a Church camp like EFY.

DO NOT create a duplicate account if you are applying for work or school at BYU as it may cause complications.

If you need help accessing your original account, please contact the Technology Support Center (801-422-4000 or ) to assist you.

"Unable to sign in: Invalid Net ID/Password" Error

If you receive the following message when attempting a CAS login: "Unable to sign in: Invalid Net ID/Password."

There are three possible causes:
  1. You entered the wrong Net ID or password.

  2. You entered the password in the wrong case. Passwords are now case-sensitive and must be entered exactly as they were created.

  3. You are locked out. If you enter an incorrect password five times within a span of five minutes, you will be locked out for five minutes. If you keep trying during this five minutes, you will just be re-starting the lockout period. After five minutes, you should be able to try again to log in.

I did not change my password but I received an email saying that I did.

If you received an email notifying you that someone else changed, or attempted to change, your password, you might be concerned that your account has been compromised.

If the email provides a verification code, then the password has not actually changed. The verification code is required to complete the password change request.
If the email confirms the password has been changed or there is concern that the attempt was intentional and malicious, we recommend that you contact the Technology Support Center (801-422-4000 or ) and they will take you through the appropriate steps.
