For more information on how you, the professors, can post content (files, videos, audio, etc.) please see this article.
It does not matter which section the assignment is created in. All sections that are linked together in the Learning Suite course will show the same assignments.
Before you have created any assignments, your course will look empty:

General
These items are required before any assignment can be created.
- To create a new assignment click + New Assignment.
- The following window will open up:
This window contains all required items for the assignment to be created.
- You must select what Type the assignment is, either Assignment, Exam, or Learning Module (LTI).
- Assignment - This is to be used for all assignments for the course, unless it is an exam created through Learning Suite Exams or taken in the Testing Center.
- Attendance - This is a newer feature used to track and score students for each day they attend class. It can be set up to be worth a specific number of points, or set a value of points for each day. Instructors can choose to have the students score their own attendance as well. Only one attendance assignment is needed for a course, if a instructor sets up multiple it may cause problems. Instead of entering the score, the user must go into the grader and mark for each class day, if they student attended; If a grader enters the score manually in the grade book the assignment will not be scored correctly.
- Please note that the attendance assignments must be worth at least 1 point to be graded correctly. If you wish for the attendance to impact the final grade, please mark it under the settings to not be included.
- Additionally, if there is a penalty for late attendance, that should be marked under the settings.
- Exam - This is used for exams created in Learning Suite and those taken in the Testing Center. Once the type is set to Exam, the delivery method will need to be set (see below). For more help and information on exam creation, please see this article.
- Learning Module - This is a new feature that will allow instructors to import grades from other sites (such as Moodle) into BYU Grades. When this assignment type is selected, a new tab appears:
- Contact the CTL if additional support is required for Learning Modules (LTI). It is possible, just coordination with the CTL is required. The CTL may be reached at (801) 422-8180 or by going to ctl.byu.edu.
- You are also required to enter a title for the Assignment.
- Note: They should be able to use special characters in the Title but in the past we have found that if there is a special character (ex. #,&,%,^...etc.) in the title you were not be able to save the assignment.
- You can add a Description, along with standard formatting tools. You can also upload documents, pictures, movies, or hyperlinks.

- Select which Category the assignment falls under
- Create a Due Date for the Assignment.
- NOTE: The Due date must be within the term or semester. If more time is desired for the assignment, set it to the last day of class and allow late assignments, or create an exception for the students who need an extension.
- Select Points Possible for this assignment.
- Select whether or not you would like to use Online Submission which allows the students to upload a file or web address straight to the Learning Suite Gradebook.
- Note: If the assignment or category is ungraded then you will not be able to check the box to enable online submission. Even if students can see the submit button, they should see an error that the submission couldn't be saved.
- When you are done, click Save.
Scoring

- Points Possible: This option should have been chosen in the General tab. This is the total points possible for the assignment. It is not possible to create an assignment with negative points possible.
- Score Entry: By default, the assignment will be set to display as points. This can be switched to percent, letter grade, or rubric.
- Weight: Weight will allow assignments of different point value to have the same effect on the final grade if weighted equally.
- Extra Credit: Sets the assignment to be worth extra credit for that category.
- Exclude: This will exclude the assignment from the final grade calculation. An important note is that these excluded assignments will not count towards dropped scores in a category that has a specified number of dropped scores.
- Passing Score Required: A required score can be set for the assignment in order for the student to receive a passing grade.
- Minimum Score: This option prevents students from receiving a score lower than what is indicated.
Note: Student must at least attempt the exam/assignment to be eligible for the minimum score.
- Do Not Drop: This score is unable to be dropped from the category.
Scheduling

This area is reserved to determine different scheduling items for the assignment. The due date was most likely set on the General tab. Here there are additional options to hide assignments and scores from the view of students in the course. You can also set the assignment to repeat daily, weekly, or monthly.
NOTE: A few courses need assignments due outside the official days of classes. Learning Suite will automatically grey out other dates, however there is a work around. First create the assignment as normal and apply any due date. Go to the schedule tab and manually add days, then drag the assignment to the correct due date.
Turnitin

This area is reserved for Turnitin options. In order to use Turnitin, the instructor must set the assignment to allow online submissions. Turning on Turnitin for an assignment with online submissions is not retroactive. This means that if students have already submitted documents to the assignment, those documents will not be uploaded to Turnitin once it has been activated.
Note: If the assignment or category is ungraded then you will not be able to check the box to enable online submission. Even if students can see the submit button, they should see an error that the submission couldn't be saved.
BYU Grades sorts assignments first by due date, and then by assignment ID (an arbitrary identification number created by the Learning Suite back end.)

ERROR:
Cannot save assignment
- If you get an error that says you cannot save the assignment, check if the page was left open for too long. If the page is left open and unattended for 15+ minutes, you will need to copy the information into a Word document, refresh the page, paste the information back into the assignment and then save. Or, open a new browser and copy everything over directly to a new assignment and save.
- Double check the points possible box on the general tab. The assignment cannot be saved if it is set to 0 points possible. Enter an appropriate point value for the assignment and you should be able to save the assignment.
