BYU Learning Suite - Turnitin Grademark Information

In Turnitin, there is a functionality called Grademark, which is Turnitin's on-screen grading system. This allows instructors to drag and drop common comments onto the paper, type comments directly onto the paper, add voice comments, and add rubric grading to make grading papers online as fast as possible.

Accessing GradeMark

The current Grademark feature is built into the Turnitin application that also does the Originality Check on student submissions. You can access it through the following steps:
  1. In Learning Suite, select "BYU Grades".

  2. Select the "Originality Check" subtab on the left hand side of the page.

  3. Click the name of the assignment that you want to view.

  4. Click "Mark Up Paper" next to the assignment you wish to grade.

  5. This will bring up the Turnitin interface, which includes Originality Check andGradeMark. (PeerMark will also appear, but it is currently unavailable.)

Note: You may first need to allow pop-ups in order to see the MarkUp features.

Note: Professors cannot access the full functionality of Grademark for courses that have closed. If they click on the "Mark Up Paper" option they will receive an error that says "you are not allowed to view this paper." They can, however, still access a read-only version of the student's assignments by clicking on the originality check percentage.

GradeMark Tools

Grademark incorporates many instructive features, including QuickMark Comments, Instructor Comments, Audio Comments, and Rubric Grading

QuickMark Comments

QuickMark comments are commonly used feedback items provided by Turnitin. They will be broken down into the categories of composition, format and punctuation.
  • Professors simply drag these prewritten comments to the appropriate place on the students paper to make a note there for students.

  • The Edit button at the bottom of a QuickMark comment allows you to add your own comment or explanation beneath the prewritten explanation.

  • To customize QuickMark comment sets, click on the wrench in the right column.

Instructor Comments

Instructors can add a comment to the document by clicking anywhere on the students paper. A box will appear allowing the instructor to insert a comment in that location.
  • If the instructor wants to save a commonly used comment, they can choose "Save as a new QuickMark" for easy access later.  They will simply have to give it a title and choose which comment set to add it to.

Audio Comments

GradeMark also allows you to leave overall audio or text comments by clicking the word bubble icon at the bottom of the right column.
  • Here you can type general text comments or record voice comments up to three minutes long.

Rubric Grading

To add a new rubric, do the following:
  1. Click on the Rubric icon at the bottom of the right column.

  2. Click on the wrench icon at the top of the Rubric column.

  3. Select the list icon in the top left corner, and select Create new rubric' from the dropdown menu.

  4. At the bottom of the box, select which type of rubric you would like to use.

    • The percentage symbol will allow you to use a standard rubric.

    • The pencil icon will allow you to create a custom rubric.

    • The zero icon will allow you to provide feedback using a rubric without including a scoring scale.

  • The professor can then input Criteria and Scales (Rows and Columns, respectively) for the rubric.

Scoring the Assignment

You can input a score for the assignment that will show up in Learning Suite under the "Grade" column of the assignment on the Originality Check page.

This score is NOT integrated with the BYU Grades tab in Learning Suite, and will need to be retyped in the Learning Suite scores page manually.

Using the Turnitin Interface, you can grade the assignment in one of two ways.
  • If you've created a rubric, you can click on the Rubric column and give point values for each of the rubric criteria. You can then select "Apply Rubric Percentage to Grade", and it will total the score automatically.

  • You can also manually input a grade in the top right corner of the interface.

Student Access

The Grademark report will be available for students to view after the due date for the assignment has passed and they have received a score in Gradebook. They can access the report by the following steps:
  • Go to the Assignments area under the Home tab.

  • Click on the View link on the far right side of the assignment.

  • Under the Instructor Feedback section, there should be a link that says View GradeMark Report.

  • Click on this link. This will bring up the TurnItIn interface where students can view the Grademark report.
