Note: The Mail app for iOS is NOT supported by OIT, but should work in iOS 11.x or greater. The Outlook app is supported and preferred. For instructions on how to configure an account within the Outlook app, refer to KB0025591. Please note, IMAP and POP3 are no longer supported because they do not handle Multi Factor Authentication.
We advise all users to utilize the most up-to-date OS for their device, but the following steps are similar between the versions of iOS. For example, "Accounts & Passwords" may be seen instead of "Passwords and Accounts" in some versions of iOS.
|
Select Settings on the Home screen. Select Mail on the Settings screen. Select Accounts. |
|
If there is already an existing account that needs to be replaced, select the account name (“Exchange” in this example), scroll down and select Delete Account and then Delete from My iPhone to confirm.
To begin adding a new account, select Add Account. |
|
Select Exchange. |
|
For "Email", enter your primary SMTP address:
The primary SMTP address is typically first name underscore last name @BYU.EDU. It is the address that is given as the return address when you send an email.
If your mailbox has been converted to Exchange Online, NetID@byu.edu may be used instead.
It may also be used if the mailbox is a student mailbox.
**If first name underscore last name doesn't work, you will need to use NetID@byu.edu
Enter a description (if desired).
Select Next.
Note: It is possible that a pop-up screen will appear that says, "It looks like this email is used with more than one account from Microsoft. Which one do you want to use?" If the message appears, select Work or School. |
| The following prompt will appear: "Sign in to your 'byu.edu' Exchange account using Microsoft?"
Select Sign In.
Note: If the you see a screen that prompts for domain, server, etc. after clicking "Sign in", check to make sure that you are able to browse and use the Internet on your device. |
|
Enter your NetID (not your email address) in the format <netid>@byu.edu.
Enter your password.
Select Sign In. |
|
Follow the Duo multi-factor authentication prompt if you receive it. More information on Duo can be found in Two-step verification (Duo). |
|
If authentication is successful, you can select which email items should be imported to your device (Mail, Contacts, Calendars, etc.). Then select Save. |
Note: Make sure that you are able to access the internet when trying to connect.
Note: The following information applies to BYU-WiFi, BYU Secure, and BYU Guest WiFi networks.
This may be due to the fact that the iPad/iPhone is new and has not authenticated on the network. After a device connects to the network you MUST open up a browser and authenticate on the network. You will then be able to connect to exchange. Note: Devices can be registered manually on the Network Device Registration page on http://it.byu.edu.
If the configuration is correct and you are still receiving an error saying "Net ID/password is not valid" or "The account information cannot be verified", then something my be out of sync across servers. Resetting your Net ID password will force a sync throughout the system.
Try syncing on the device's data plan (if applicable). Synchronization will not be successful over WiFi without a strong enough connection.
If you've verified the configuration and the network connection try restarting the device (by holding down the lock button and then sliding to power-down) and try setting up the account again.
If there is a previous profile that is incorrectly configured (IMAP rather than exchange) and you create a second, correctly configured profile, there will still be issues unless the incorrect profile on the phone is disabled.
If you are getting a message that the server is unavailable it may be that you are not connected correctly to the network. Open a web browser to check for internet connectivity. You may also need to reset the phone after configuring the setup before.
When using an iPhone to configure your account there will occasionally be an "unable to verify account information" error. Go to Settings > General > Reset (at the bottom on the list) > Reset Network Settings. The phone will reboot and you should be able to add the account successfully.
